The 80's

During the mid to late 80's I was freelancing for various animation studios, to fill in the weeks between gigs I began working on illustrations with my wife Ona, mainly on editorial magazine stuff and occasionally books and advertizing.
A recent house move has unearthed some of this old 80's art and I decided to post some just for fun.

This artwork of course, was made before computers and so for most of these, we used a mechanical printing approach, whereby we would supply the printers with the artwork separated up into layers.

This next batch was for Gourmet-Traveller magazine back in 1987 or so.
We did a fair amount of work for these folk back then, here are just some I picked out.
(Bit rough though.)

Local soviet dish?

This one was for a chapter heading in an educational book for Angus and Robertson wayback in 86.

The "Carnation" series was for a print ad campaign, there were six in total and all had to be done by hand and directly on the same bit of card, we used stencil masks to airbrush flat areas and light grads. It was a nightmare, any mistakes meant you had to start again, we patched a lot with paint overs but it was hard back then.....Helllloooo Photoshop.

This illo was for the American Express Magazine from around 1988 or so.
You can certainly tell what style was in vouge during that particular era.

After a two year stint working in the video game biz, I managed to gain a wealth of new knowledge and a host of great new friends. I worked on storyboards and pre-viz for a Warhammer game and as a concept artist for an Avatar game.

LUCKY LYDIA

Back in the late 90's, Bob Camp and I made a pilot with Film Graphics for Cartoon Network.
It was based on a loose idea I had, about a kid who's just lucky.
At that stage, the networks were quite interested but it was still just a loose idea.
That's where Bob comes in to the picture, he grabbed the premise instantly and turned it into a properly structured cartoon, bringing tons of "funny" into the concept.
Needless to say of course , that Linda Simensky and Kahki Jones, over at C.N. at the time, were paramount to this whole project. They were keen on Lucky Lydia right from the start.
Cartoon Network green lit the pilot, we made it and it went to air. Although the series was never picked up, we still had a lot of fun writing the stories and producing the animation.

Bob made up the word "Coolaroid", meaning two things really, cool and hemorrhoids, a form of Yin and Yang, good and bad.

"THROWDOWN"
A while back, I was animation director on a reface for Cartoon Network,
and one of the last, yet most fun bumpers was this one for the "Class Of 3000" show.
I storyboarded and co-directed this clip with Fletcher Moules.
Both AnimalLogic and Film Graphics were producers of this stint.
As this was one of our last bumpers, I had a chance to animate some stuff as well.

(Currently trying to find a better clip for this post.)

One of Coco Monkey's most feared adversary, Queen Komodo was a fun project and yes, it did make it on air.
I sorted the design and direction, animation was by Andrew Finlayson and Jomar Ravalo.
The production was handled by Filmgraphics.

A while ago now, we went on a short holiday to the islands of Vanuatu.
The tropical scenery there was so awesome, that I had to try and draw stuff.
The color picture, was an attempt at a bit o' paintin', well at least with photoshop
anyways. The pen drawing, was of the typical local transport. I'd like to color that up one day.

Dunderheads

Dunderheads was a pitch for an animated tv. series that I conceived, designed and directed with the financial help of Film Graphics. There is no dialogue on this show, instead it is musically driven.
The shorts were to be 3 or 4 minutes in duration. This idea was never picked up but it was a lot of fun working on it.

I can't remember the name of the product for this job, it was from Europe and something to do with a series of tokens, that you could collect or swap, I was asked to draw them as three different characters, and respective personalities
so I just worked with the shapes of the tokens and drew characters on that.

I just cannot remember what this pitch was for, the client showed me samples of a well known cartoonist, and I can't remember that either!
